About the Walk:
Join us on this beautiful walk around Norbury. This walk takes us along an impressive canal embankment, 60 feet high and a mile long. It was not part of the original plans for the canal, until a local landowner objected to the canal cutting through his prized game preserves at Shelmore Wood. This forced Thomas Telford, the engineer, to swing the line of the canal westwards and move millions of tons of earth from the nearby cuttings at Grub Street and Cowley. Due to repeated landslips, it took almost 5½ years to build and was the last section of the canal to be completed in 1835.
Is it for me? Easy walking along farm tracks, canal towpath and quiet country lanes. Undulating in places, but no obvious gradients to tackle. Ideal walk for this time of year if you don’t like trudging through muddy fields.
